Helpful Speaking Tips
Because all speakers have value to us as hard of hearing people, we want to be able to hear and understand everything that you say. Here are some suggestions that will be helpful to all of us:
- Please keep the microphone close to, but just below, your mouth. We need to be able to see your lips in order to lipread.
- Please do face us directly when you speak.
- If your speaking pace tends to be on the fast side, consider slowing down. This will enable us to process and understand what you are saying.
- When an audience member asks a question or makes a comment, please repeat it before responding.
We recognize that it can be difficult to change one’s speaking style, even for a brief period of time, so we may remind you. But do take that as a compliment…it can only mean that we want to know what you have to say.
