Madison Police work with Deaf Unity to keep us safer!

With about 20% of Wisconsin’s population hard of hearing or deaf, coming into contact with public safety officials sets the stage for miscommunication to occur. Contact between hard of hearing or deaf citizens and the police can be fraught with fear of being arrested simply due to not understanding each other. It’s time for us to be proactive in order to minimize and prevent these misunderstandings from occurring.

Join us for a presentation by representatives from the Madison Police Department and Deaf Unity in a workshop addressing these problems and answering questions about how we can work together.

Deaf Unity is a community based organization that provides services to and advocates for deaf victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Representatives listen to and provide emotional and moral support to deaf victims of abuse, empower victims with information and strategies, and go to court and medical appointments with them.

Jenny Buechner is the Executive Director for Deaf Unity. She is a Wisconsin native who was born deaf and graduated from Gallaudet University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. She has previously held positions in the telephone relay service industry in customer services, marketing and project management.

Jenny is involved in a number of state and national organizations such as the Wisconsin Association of the Deaf (WAD), the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and Deaf Unity. She can be contacted at director@deafunitywi.org.

Kyle Katers is a Project Coordinator for Deaf Unity and a Green Bay native who holds a degree in Marketing and Graphic Communications. He has previously held positions in marketing and project management.

Kyle has been involved in associations for the Deaf, both at the local and state levels, as well as the communications committee for Deaf Unity. Kyle is passionate about issues involving hard of hearing and Deaf and their right to equal access. Kyle Katers can be reached at kyle@deafunitywi.org.

We hope to see you there!
